YSAGS Computer/Photography grp

Hello All,
We are talking photography at our next meeting. We will also touch on computer concerns as you will see further down in this notice
1) Photography: Since we did not get to our planned agenda last meeting lets have a look at the Cambridge in Colour Tutorial again. You should be able to see it by clicking here: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/digital-photo-editing-workflow.htm
2) Photography course offered at the Shawnigan Lake Community Centre. Cim MacDonald is doing a local session again this Fall. Cim lives in Chemanius is a member of our CVCC camera club and is an award winning photographer. If you can afford the fee and have the time, this is a great opportunity to learn photography from a pro.
See the picture below.
3) Computers: Just so you know - Mike and I had the first Beginning Computers Class last Wednesday 10 to 12 am. We had 3 students and although the meeting was a little bit disjointed(aren't they all) we deemed it a very good start. We may have 2 more students joining next Wednesday. I would like to extend an invitation to any one of you to come as a student or instructor. The aim is to keep this a Basic Computing class.
4) Computers: I picked up a complete working Mac today. It's a sweet little machine and I'll bring it in Wednesday.

An interesting Monday. We did close to 6 K walking to the wharf at Shawnigan Lake We then circled
Shawnigan Village, then walked through it taking note of and discussing all we saw. Dianne was
able to inform us about some history of the buildings and other things we were not aware of.
Coffee was at the Chippery with more information on the Scarecrow Trail and events planned
for the village. Next Monday Sept. 9th. the forecast is for fair weather which we will take
advantage of and walk Thetis Lake and have lunch at the Six Mile Pub. Meet at the parking lot
at the Legion at 9:30 am.     V.M.

My map and photos of todays hike from Burnt Bridge to Kinsole Trestle.  Ten kilometers with good company, good weather and good coffee at the Chippery.  -  Dennis.

A little confusing. Follow red flags from Burnt Bridge(Start) to Kinsole, then brown line to Finish. Red flags indicate "waypoints" but some remarks over-written due to space restrictions. This printed from GPS maps.

Chores come first--e.g. setting up YSAGS Scarecrow for Shawnigan Inspiration Day.

View from Burnt Bridge.

One of several small bridges over dry creeks. At left is a tree growing from a stump.

Koksilah River.

Gas Pipeline from one perspective --

--and from another.

Looking up at the Kinsole.

YSAGS Computer group

Hello All,

So it is back to our regular schedule(It seems we were never not on our regular schedule!).
1) I get regular newsletters from a site called CNET Community hosted by Lee Koo. People send him pertinent computer questions which are posted in the newsletter and readers are encouraged to reply with answers and their thoughts.
A reader asked the question: "Help me decide - Do I buy a PC or a Mac? Which seemed very appropriate for our group right now.
There are the usual responses for and against on either side of the issue, but there also are some very thoughtful in depth replies that I think really let us make an informed choice.
2) We will have updates of our activities. I will present a proposal to the YSAGS Directors in the afternoon about our planned Basic Computer Training class, hopefully to start on Wednesday.
3) Please come with your questions, problems and your thoughts about where we should go with our computer group. The group is for all of us and I need input from all of you.

N.B.: I just tried those 2 links in this post  and they just don't work for me.
Here is a SnipIt of part of it.

My offerings from our Kingbourne/Koksilah Park walk today.  Some GPS issues but distance shows 5Km which sounds reasonable.  I missed putting in waypoints so mapping not perfect.

Green line is GPS trace (these IIIIII not part of walk). Forgot to mark Mine Shaft as waypoint.
Broken orange line is park trails shown on map. Gray Lane is street name.

Google Earth version.  GPS not showing actual winding trace as in some previous
maps.  Something else to figure out the why's of.
River level very low but also very calm.

Water bugs making waves.

An even dozen - enough for a meal?

Inside the mine shaft. "Any GOLD in here??"

"Down by the riverside."

A very scenic and enjoyable walk for the group.

YSAGS Comuter/Photography group

Hello YSAGS photographers,
We have talked about editing or post production of our photos after they are moved from the camera to the computer. Some cameras allow you to edit in camera but my experience is that the image is much too small on the camera monitor to work on and most camera's editing capabilities are quite limited. There are however many editing programs available and some free ones are great to become familiar with the various possibilities without being overwhelming. I can suggest a few if you are interested.
A photography site called Cambridge in Colour has many great tutorials. I'll talk about one that outlines a good procedure on post production for your images once they have been downloaded to your computer. Below are their suggestions in 10 steps.

Lori Treloar - Curator of the Shawnigan Lake Museum will visit us during this meeting. She will talk to us about the museum and how we can participate as photographers.
Check the Museums website here: www.shawniganlakemuseum.com
AND as usual we will talk a bit about computers and/or try to find answers to questions that any of us might have.

We had great weather and a good walk along the Esquimalt Lagoon. Always a large variety of birds
to see. We then went on to the Mychosen Café for our lunch and a walk to see the animals and fowl
that are kept in an enclosure near by. Thank you Marianne for being the driver. The walk for Monday
Aug 26 is cancelled. Please see the Blog on a decision for Monday Sept 2nd which is Labor Day. V.M.

My offering from our walk today is two versions of the track from my GPS.  Still very much a learning process - but interesting.  A very enjoyable outing.

Had to print and then scan this GPS image in order to load it into my picture files.  Editing information a little difficult.
Bridges were labeled Bridge A and Bridge B.  BX1 was another bridge. This is a picture of the GPS screen.

GPS track superimposed on Google Earth map.  Push-pins with labels added with Google Earth program - other printing done with Picasa.

Today we started our walk from Shawnigan Beach Estates, Gregory Road in search of a trail that would get us to the Quarry. Well, with the effort of a lot of "leaders we made it and did it in good time for coffee at the Chippery. We figure the distance walked at just under 7 km(Right Denis?).
Here are some pictures.

I just had to share this with everybody.
