Men's Walking Group

Today we walked the Cobble Hill Mountain and since this was the last organized walk for this season we celebrated by having lunch at the Cobblestone Pub. I think they love the YSAGS groups coming in. We seem to have a special table there by now.
Since Dennis is away we have no GPS map to show but here are some pictures.

This is the first stop on the path going up. I'm not sure what this is but I think it is a big water pump used as part of logging operations years ago.

This is the group resting and talking.

A strange tree.

Aah! Another rest and more talking.

Finally! We made it to the top. And quess what - some talking. We could go by the name of the Men's Talking group.

An interesting Arbutus tree at the top.

A view of the valley on the back side of the mountain.

The wildlife of Cobble Hill.

And here we are in the pub with a well deserved meal.

Men's Walking Group

Better late than never - my map and photos from our grueling bike trip to Lake Cowichan.  We complain a lot about the aches and pains but it was still great fun - just glad we are still able to do these things.  -  DeNNis.

We started at LePage Rd (the red box on the right) - the arrows show the route we took .  The trail to Lk Cowichan was quite smooth  -  different story from Lk Cowichan to Skutz Falls.  Lots of rocks sticking up through the trail making it difficult to enjoy the scenery.

Early in the ride - still looking quite perky.

Old logging train on the Museum grounds.

Had a look through the Museum - very interesting and educational.

The weir at Lake Cowichan - there is much concern about low water levels at this time.

"Old Dog Therapy" - This dog was having much difficulty with his hind legs but found swimming much easier than walking - he spent several minutes just enjoying the water while we chattted with his master.

One of the carvings at the Forest Workers Memorial Park depicting the logging operations - a site worth visiting.

Time to go have lunch -

Across the bridge -

- to the park where we enjoyed sitting in the shade to eat.

On the way back we crossed three trestles.  This is the second and largest, the Holt Trestle.  It was here where we got pictures of a river otter feeding back in April of 2009 when we did our previous bike trip up this way.

A couple of panoramic shots taken at Skutz Falls - the upper one showing the fish ladder system.

Men's walking group

We had great weather again today which always makes for a great walk. But today we enjoyed it on our annual bike ride. 7 of us had a great ride into Lake Cowichan found a nice park to have our lunch in, looked around the town a little and then headed back to our trucks on Lepage Rd where we started our ride. We did 33 kilometers and my rear felt like it. ha good day. Well we have had a good run this past year and its time for some of us to wind down so we plan on doing our last organized hike for the summer on next Monday the 30th we will hike Cobble Hill Mountan and then have lunch at the Cobble stone getting back to the Legion by 2pm. Any one wishing to continue walking during the summer some will probable meet at the Legion regular time. I will if available making up our walks as we go. I would like to thank all those who helped my make up walks during the year. Thanks and we see you all on Monday. Denis.

Well, after the great success of organizing, setting up and clean up of our recent Garage Sale, we treated ourselves to a well deserved Barbeque. Thanks for the use of your yard Skip and once again Thanks Denis for spearheading the organizing of the very relaxing afternoon spent with freinds. Thanks to all the volunteers that provided great food. And last, Thanks Marg for providing a cake that this time did not come from Thriftys.
Here are some pictures.

Men's Walking Group

Nine of us walked today from the Legion, thru Cairnes Park and a loop around Mt Baldy/Sylvester Rd. and back.  Including our extra little walk up to the Shawnigan Coffee House we figure we came very close to 10 Km.  Sorry Denis couldn't join us.  The weather held for us as usual.  - DeNNis.

Legion is top-center. Did counter-clockwise loop (blue trace). Map shows up pretty well - some trails, some road.

One of several Giant Mushrooms.
Into the deep, dark woods.

A dewy daisy.
Just in case anyone gets lost.
A little up-hill climbing - good for the knees and legs.

Somebodys Aunt - or is that Ant???

This guy was more interested in what we were doing than in the dogs barking above him.
